I wake up at 06:30am, had a bad sleep because of the loud music last night and the many mosquitoes. I pack up my half-wet tent from yesterday's storm, have a NesCafe from Josef and Elke, the couple from Regen, and start cycling, one last time along this fantastic Tiber bike highway.
Those who know me know that I like to come on the last minute, sometimes even with an academic quarter-hour late. Since I don't know what to expect, I'm actually 40 minutes early at the train station today. In Roma Termini, you have to go through a security gate like at the airport, Track 2 is on the departure schedule. But there's nothing at Track 2, so I go back. 15 minutes before departure, the track is announced on these display boards: 2est. I ask where that is - of course it's somewhere completely different - and join 3 Italians with bikes, who obviously also want to take this train.
Officially, 6 bicycles are allowed per EC, and there are 6 hanging devices. The Italians help me lift my bike into the carriage and hang it up - without luggage. One of their bikes is therefore bike number 7, it's in the aisle, and the bike of the Swabian e-bike rider is number 8, but nobody cares. He goes all the way to Venice Mestre, and I spontaneously decide not to get off in Bologna, but to continue to there as well. I buy my ticket online on the train, I'm proud that I manage to do that and disappointed that nobody checks it. He helps me get off and assures me that after his retirement in 3 years, he also wants to do something bigger, not just week tours.
In Mestre, I have to carry my bike up a staircase again, from the basement to the daylight. The dark-skinned street musician sitting on the same staircase jumps up and carries it up for me. When I want to throw a few coins into his cap, he is almost offended, no, he doesn't want that.
It's not far to the campground west of Mestre, I enjoy the wind, the clouds, and the coolness. The streets are clean and tidy, I feel like I'm riding through a suburb of Munich, Germering or something. Everything is green and fresh, there's even an evening thunderstorm with rain, I'm very happy to be back in a Schneehuhn comfort zone and put on a jacket. I enjoy the rain pounding on my tent while cooking vegetables in the apse. Life can be so simple and beautiful.
