Theth is the heart of the Albanian Alps

Gepubliceerd: 21.05.2022

The Theth National Park in the Albanian Alps is named after the village of Theth. Established in 1966, it covers 2630 hectares. The village of Theth is the heart of the Albanian Alps and is located in a basin surrounded by mountains and snow-capped peaks.

From here, you can take small and long hikes, including to the nearby Valbona Valley and the Koman Lake. However, these extensive hikes should only be done with a local tour guide, as it is easy to get lost on the seven-hour hike. Some paths have become narrow trails or are almost impossible to find.

Along the way, you will pass a beautiful small village church and a waterfall. But even if you don't take one of the hikes, you can still enjoy the magnificent nature here.

The access road via the Qafa e Thores (English: Thore Pass) was quite challenging for us. After thinking that the SH 75 was demanding, we were proven wrong here. Although the road has been paved last year, it is already heavily worn out and will not last long. The recently installed guardrails have been torn down or have already collapsed. The road surface is partially destroyed. We learned from locals that the snow plow did a lot of damage, and there were rockfalls on some parts of the road. Despite gaining a few gray hairs, we made it and were rewarded with this breathtaking nature.

Free-roaming horses, cows, and a lot of wildlife cross your path. After a walk through the valley, we spent the night directly by the river. Unfortunately, we were hit by a sudden drop in temperature and a storm front the next day, so we had to leave in the morning instead of the afternoon. But it was probably the most impressive nature experience we have both had so far.
