Tag 70: Melbourne - The Anglo-Saxon Australia

Gepubliceerd: 04.01.2023

Melbourne is located on the southeast coast of Australia and is the capital of the state of Victoria. Around 4.72 million people live in the second largest city on the continent. The population consists to a large extent of immigrants of Chinese, British, Greek, Italian, Irish, Croatian or Vietnamese origin. Multicultural life is celebrated in Melbourne and is reflected in all areas of life.

The beaches around Melbourne are real attractions. Especially in the south of Port Philip Bay, they entice with golden sand. But there are also beautiful bathing areas near the city center, in Albert Park, in St. Kilda and in Elwood. St. Kilda Beach is located 6 kilometers south of the city center and is Melbourne's most famous beach, with shopping opportunities, food and market stalls, and a long pier for beautiful walks. There is also a colony of little penguins here, which can be observed at sunset.

The city center of Melbourne can be easily explored on foot or by tram. One attraction is the free City Circle Tram. The wine-red historic tram circles the city center every quarter of an hour, while an audio guide provides information about the next stop and the sights on the route - including Federation Square, the aquarium, the Docklands, the shopping mile, Bourke Street, and other highlights. Stops marked with the sign "City Circle Tram Stop" indicate the boarding opportunities.

For breakfast, with the help of a friend, I managed to activate an eSIM for Australia. Now we have internet and can use Uber. The driver Sai is from India and a Formula 1 fan. On the way to the city center, we take a lap on the race track in Albert Park, then we go to Federation Square. Photos are taken, souvenirs are bought, and a phone is bought for Pius, who is celebrating his birthday today. His old one fell into the water on Mystery Island and doesn't work anymore. Finally, we take the tram in the "free zone area" of the city, and then return to the port by Uber.
