Today was our first day in Funchal. The flower festival began with the children's parade and the construction of the flower wall (Wall of Hope). The children come here with their parents and put flowers in the wall. The procession is led by children in historical costumes. This officially opens the flower festival.

Then we took the cable car to Monte, with a great view of the Atlantic, and from there we took a rapid ride back down in a basket sledge, at least half of the way. We walked the rest of the way back. There was a lot going on in the center, flower exhibitions, colorful stalls and cultural performances. A visit to the market hall with its fruit, vegetable and souvenir stalls was also a must. Everywhere people are preparing for tomorrow's parade. We are excited and are letting the sound of the Atlantic slow us down in our hotel room today.
