Epidauros - Ancient Epidaurus

Gepubliceerd: 26.09.2019

Full boat + empty water = departure

This is a simple and straightforward equation. So this morning, after breakfast, we reluctantly left the dream bay and headed towards Epidaurus.

Epidaurus is undoubtedly a highlight of any trip to Greece. Judging by the parking lots and infrastructure, there seems to be a lot of activity here during the season. However, we arrived quite early and there wasn't much going on yet. We were able to park the van in the shade. That was more comfortable for Ziva than in the blazing sun.

But now to Epidaurus: the glamorous health and cult site of antiquity is located in a wide plain, surrounded by gentle hills. In Epidaurus, Asklepios (known to us as Asclepius), a son of Apollo, was worshipped. For many centuries, the place was both a religious center and a spa. Temples, colonnades, hospitals, entertainment venues, hotels, and even thermal baths during Roman times - the guests lacked nothing. However, the main attraction of the large area is the 14,000-seat, 2,300-year-old theater, the best preserved in all of Greece. Every summer, it comes to life again during the theater festival.

After the visit, we decided not to drive so far today and instead aim for a campsite to end our supply and disposal crisis. So we drove a few more kilometers to Palaia Epidaurus and are once again in a dream place: 5 meters from the sea on a small, old but well-kept campsite. There is hardly any activity here anymore, and with 28° air, about 25° water, and a gentle breeze, it's quite comfortable.

Actually, we plan to head towards Corinth tomorrow and visit a monastery on the way... We'll see!
