Today's plan:

Breakfast, many hours on the beach, quick shopping, drive to Puponga

This is how the day really went:

After breakfast, when we were getting ready and I had just ended my phone call, Maren's words were: "I think we have a huge problem!". While making the bed, she noticed that moisture was collecting on the wood under the mattress and that black spots were already visible there. So we decide to go to the nearest hardware store before we go to the beach. While we were driving there, we had a long time to think about how we could best solve the problem. Because you really won't believe it... there are 100 cars on the South Island and we're all stuck in traffic. Apparently someone had a breakdown and now nothing works. Instead of the planned 20 minutes, we sit in the car for over an hour. We decided to mill holes in the wood to ensure good ventilation. Unfortunately we can't borrow anything from the hardware store, but they give us the tip to try another store. You can rent large machines and equipment there. We explain our problem to the super nice man and he gives us a drill and offers us to do it right on his farm. He and another man keep coming by and checking to see if we're getting along. We drill the holes, sand and paint the wood with the remaining oil that we used for the work surface in the kitchen. In the end we don't even have to pay anything for it and there are lots of travel tips too. Afterwards we go shopping for eggs and gas and get some really tasty stuffed donuts. Then we drive up to Pakawau and you wouldn't believe it, but before dinner we lie on the beach there for an hour.
