Franz Josef Glacier

Exactly one month after Christmas Eve - on 24.01 - at 11am, seven adventurous, hiking-loving Germans set off to complete the Roberts Point Track. An 11 km hike with a viewing platform of the Franz Josef Glacier as the destination.

The first stop was Peters Pool. In the past, the glacier could also be seen from here. But nowadays it has gone much further back into the valley.

The path to the glacier was very diverse, as we were almost constantly walking on stones, climbing cliffs, and waterfalls and bridges made the way particularly challenging. I felt a little uneasy when we crossed the 111m long suspension bridge that was already shaking quite a bit with only 5 people.

I was impressed by the many waterfalls that could be seen everywhere in the mountains.

Once we reached the top, we had an almost cloudless, sunny view of the glacier. We stayed there for a while and had a snack.

The way back seemed easier at first than the ascent, but at the extremely steep parts, we had to be very careful not to slip. Unfortunately, shortly after we started our way back, it started to rain, which made things even more difficult. Luckily, there were enough roots and tree trunks (and Niklas) to hold on to.

We arrived back at the bottom shortly after 5 pm. It had stopped raining by then. We showered, did some shopping, and then went to a somewhat remote campground. It was only a few meters from the beach, but we still had a wonderful view of the mountains.

We watched the sunset with the couple Jana and Nick and then went to bed because it was too cold to sit outside. Hard to believe that just 2 days earlier, we were swimming in the ocean.
