The Law Faculty at our university organizes a simulation of the United Nations every year. It's absolutely crazy to participate in it (especially since everything was in Spanish), but it was mandatory for my International Law course. So, I had no other choice and I was dreading it for weeks beforehand. Eventually, the day came and with a queasy feeling, I made my way to the first negotiating session as a representative for Germany in the General Assembly. I didn't really know what to expect. After the opening ceremony and an official photo, the different committees started their first negotiation round.
On the second day, I was visibly more relaxed. And even though it was incredibly challenging for me to discuss the implementation of the Durban Anti-Racism Program and the abolition of economic sanctions in Spanish, I really enjoyed the week. Looking back, I would say it was definitely one of the best and most memorable experiences during my semester abroad. In between the negotiation rounds, there were interesting conferences and lectures, and in the evenings, we would unwind with a drink, a communal dinner, or at a bar. Thanks to Mayabmun, I made some amazing friendships and I am incredibly grateful that participation was mandatory for me, even though I cursed it before. Sometimes, you need to be forced into happiness ;-)
