May 20th/Day 51: Pommiers - Montbrison

St. Jakob by Marie-Martine

It was a very beautiful day. It was a long stage with 33 km, but that was fine. I was not sure about the planning until Le Puy, and I was also not sure about the weather, so I wanted to be ahead. Sometimes you have to take a shortcut off the Camino de Santiago.

But there were highlights along the way.

First Montverdun, an old monastery high up on the mountain. I had reserved accommodation there, but I cancelled it again, because that was only 20 km from where I started.

In Champdieu, a medieval town, I met Marcel again. That was reason enough to have a beer at lunchtime.

Impressive: the story of Adam and Eve, not listening to the warning!

In the early afternoon I arrived in Montbrison. The local Camino de Santiago society provided information about the Camino de Santiago at the cathedral, so as a pilgrim arriving from Germany, I went straight into the local press:

In the evening, I stayed with Marie-Martine. Totally crazy: at 60 years old, she walked the Camino de Santiago from Montbrison to Santiago de Compostela, then to Rome, and at 65 years old, she walked over 5000 km to Jerusalem. All by herself with a tent. The pilgrim passports were incredibly impressive.
She has several children and six grandchildren, now she is separated. I didn't dare to ask if the separation was before or after her 60th birthday🙄
