Just when you think it couldn't get any worse, an emergency comes in and it's handled at a snail's pace... on top of that, you're yelled at for what you're doing. Maria tried to lift the baby's head up so there wouldn't be any pressure on the tangled umbilical cord - but she was accused of squeezing the cord and killing the baby. What a mess!
You can really say that doctors and nurses did everything to bring a dead baby into the world. With us, it takes a maximum of 15 minutes, then the baby is born by C-section. In Tanzania, you can take your time - 1 hour later the baby was delivered and we did our best to keep it alive... when it was somewhat stable, it was transferred to the pediatric clinic. I have never missed our pediatricians so much!
Afterwards, I was torn between conflicting emotions. On one hand, I was glad that the baby had survived, even though I wasn't sure if it would stay that way in the following days. On the other hand, I was so angry and disappointed that I wished the doctors would see what kind of mess they were creating by having the baby not survive. But if that had happened, their only response would have been: that's what God wanted...
