Day 32 - October 5th, 2023 wild ride to Ushguli

Today we plan to drive up into the mountains to Mestia. According to the internet, the road is paved up to the top. On the way there we discover the Prometheus Cave just behind Kutaisi. A guided tour lasts about 90 minutes. There is a rich stalactite treasure to admire. The extent of the cave is enormous. We continue along a beautiful valley for about 100 km, moderately uphill. Then the road branches off into the mountains. The road surface disappears more and more and soon we are on an off-road track. Road construction work is underway. I am very surprised and check everything. The navigation system looked for the shortest route to Mestia and it leads via Ushguli, we didn't think of that. Now we have to get through it. We're up at 6 p.m. It is bitterly cold at 2000 m altitude. We rent a hotel, have a hearty dinner at 7 p.m. and crawl into our beds because the rooms aren't heated. 7935km
