Chapter 14: Underground in Kiruna

The city of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland does not offer many attractions above ground. The historic church is one of them.

The constant low temperatures create impressive ice crystals.

Below Kiruna, the largest underground iron ore mine in the world extends. The underground visitor center vividly shows the development of local mining. Nowadays, massive electrically driven machines dominate the work underground.

In the visitor center, 'Safety first' is the motto - wearing a safety helmet is mandatory and high-speed roller rides in the tunnels are rather unwanted.

We spend the night just behind the Finnish border.
