The first stage is behind us.
On Sunday, April 24th, 2022, we flew from Berlin to London. Since we had already traveled to Berlin the day before and slept directly at the terminal in the hotel, we were able to take the first flight early without much effort (almost 'just in time').
The flight itself was entertaining and relaxed. Upon arrival at Heathrow, the biggest challenge for us was to stay oriented and find the shuttle bus to Southampton. The bus ride took about 2 hours, the perfect time for a nap for the children.
Upon arrival at the port in Southampton, it was time to wait. First, we were taken to the COVID-19 testing center and then to the waiting area with all the travelers. It was very boring and tested the patience of all of us. We couldn't resist pulling the 'kid's wild card' and received the negative test result faster than expected. After that, everything went quickly, off to check-in and boarding the Queen Mary 2.
On the ship, we were greeted by a large reception committee at every corner. The amazement was great and the cabin was small. :D
The highlight in the interior cabin was the bunk bed for Benedikt. From then on, it served not only as a sleeping place but also as a playroom and climbing frame.
We spent the seven days at sea:
- indulging in culinary delights
- taking a walk on deck every day
- trying out all sports activities
- enjoying the peace and seclusion at sea
- catching up on the lack of sleep from everyday life with toddlers
For the arrival in New York, we got up early at 5 o'clock so as not to miss the unique experience of sailing past the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River.
All in all, it was worth it for us to take the ship instead of the plane. We were able to relax from everyday stress. And for the children, it was advantageous to gradually adjust to the time difference instead of having it all at once.
For the coming week, we will stay in New York and explore the city through the eyes of children.
