Halifax Citadel

The Halifax Citadel is a large star-shaped fortress on a hill overlooking the city. Well, at least over Downtown Halifax, but in earlier centuries this area was settled by the first settlers. The fortress is now a kind of living museum, the staff wear the same clothing as the members of the 78th Highlanders and the Royal Artillery. Dressed like this, they guard the entrance and perform guard change and parade demonstrations. In addition, the Royal Artillery fires a cannon shot every day at noon. This Halifax tradition is one of the oldest in the world. We heard some of these shots on Canada Day - damn loud as they echo from the surrounding houses.

Inside the fortress there is a large house which houses a war museum and a small café.
From the edge of the fortress you have a great view of the city.
There is a moat around the fort, part of it has been recreated as a trench. You get an impression of how the riflemen had to live in the world wars.
