I don't speak Spanish ...but nobody cares.

Ippubblikat: 17.07.2016

Hello again my dear readers,

first of all I was very happy that more people than expected actually read about my first impressions of Mexico (or maybe they just hit the link by accident). No matter how you got here, I'm glad you did.

Today I arrived on an island called Cozumel, where I will actually stay for the next few weeks until I head off to Mexico City. But I'd rather start where I left off....

There I was in Playa del Carmen still trying to figure out what I actually expected from this journey and still waiting for the moment when people would actually stop asking me the same questions: 'You're traveling alone?' and 'Aren't you scared?' . What do they expect me to say...'Oh hey...now that you mentioned it, you're right... I'm scared of everything and maybe I should just take the next flight home because at home bad things don't happen...they only happen when you travel'.

But alright, a lot of people ask things without actually wanting to know the answer. They just live in their own little universe where only all-in holidays exist. No offense, It is a great thing once in a while but is it so hard to believe that there are people out there who want to see more than just their back yard. I feel myself getting really annoyed when people don't think outside of the box and since this is my blog - I thought why not write it down where people most likely share my opinion.- So now that I've let my steam off, I can continue to write about things that really matter....

Like an adapter for the different types of sockets, in different countries. You might laugh but if I didn't bring one, I would not be able to write these lines right now.

You might have noticed by now that my blog is not just telling you about the things going on over here, but also I'm trying to remind you of things that might be helpful for your next journey...maybe something like a pack list.

I also wouldn't be able to charge my camera, which brings me to another story.

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen

The other night I was at the beach, watching the sun go down while taking pictures of the beautiful sky. A stranger, who was just sitting 5 meters away came over and asked me in Spanish if I was a photographer, which I thought was quite funny, because obviously I'm not. So I had a small - to probably everyone else meaningless - conversation but I felt like it gave me a better idea of the language, even though one of my first sentences was about my Spanish being 'muy malo'.

After all, I think I can speak for everyone who is learning a new language that the beginning is very hard because you're head keeps saying 'You don't have enough vocabulary, neither the grammar'. But we should all remember that it is way more important : that people even appreciate that you're trying at all. Or have you ever laughed about a foreigner making mistakes in your language ? I doubt it.

So after that rush of excitement I had because I learned a few new Spanish words the other night, the next day begun with a not so nice experience (probably every girl has went through) with two drunk idiots at the beach. To cut it short : Those two guys just would not want to leave my side for at least 10 minutes -that felt like a lifetime- . It was also not very helpful that I said 'I don't speak Spanish', which is quite paradox and never ever works when someone had a drink too much.
So this is probably the part where all the people who always ask 'Aren't you scared?' feel vindicated. Well, I'm sorry but things like that also happen at home, because you can find people like that everywhere. So this story ends with me standing up from my beach spot, telling them that I will leave if they won't and them finally leaving. Sadly they have put a crack in my positive view on Mexicans, because until that day I have only met kind people. But there is always something positive...If they're weren't people like those too, we would probably all forget to appreciate the ones who are nice to us....I still don't need to relive this and I just wish for a little more respect towards women in this world. Its 2016 after all.

So this was Playa del Carmen for me. I would definitely recommend this city because the people are 'usually' nice and you feel welcomed. Who knows what's going to happen next...but what I do know is: I made the right choice to come here and does it really matter what I expect? I think for me it's just better to live the moment and do not have any expectations but it to become unforgettable in some way at least.

Best wishes to everyone
