'Winter is coming'

Ippubblikat: 15.06.2017

Our time in Croatia (and therefore our entire trip) is coming to an end. But we don't want to leave Croatia without seeing Dubrovnik. So after our two nights in Split, we make our way to the southernmost "big city" in the country. After a three-hour drive, we arrive at our accommodation in beautiful sunshine, check in, and go shopping at the nearby supermarket. Since the weather is still great and we want to take a whole day to explore the old town of Dubrovnik, we spend the rest of the day at the beach.

The following day, we explore Dubrovnik. After taking a bus from our accommodation to the city, we climb the city walls in the morning. From above the city, we have breathtaking views of the sea, the city, and the surrounding area. Although we are making slow progress due to the influx of tourists, we have more time to enjoy the scenery.

The many steps and the hot weather call for a lunch break. We spend this very extensive break in a small Bosnian restaurant that we found on TripAdvisor beforehand.

Afterwards, we stroll through the streets of the old town. At 4:30 pm, we join about 25 people at the meeting point for the thematic tour. Because we don't just want to take any city tour, but want to visit the locations that served as filming locations for the TV series "Game of Thrones". Over the next 2 hours, we walk around the old town of Dubrovnik, stopping at various filming locations as pointed out by our guide.

Although we imagined the tour to be a bit more exciting, we are not disappointed overall. It's funny, for example, to see that spectacular murders (like the Purple Wedding) were filmed next to a simple parking lot outside the city walls, or that the film crew could only film in fragmented 15-minute blocks because the old town could not be completely closed off due to tourism revenue, resulting in tourists occasionally entering the city through the film set.

The last day in Dubrovnik, which was originally planned as a beach day, is limited to 2 hours at the beach due to the weather. Because yes: It also rains in Croatia. But that's fine with us if it means we can enjoy the sun for the entire next week. Because in our last week, we will be sailing. Sun and a little bit of wind wouldn't be the worst scenario ; )
