Rijeka and the unpronounceable city // Session 19

Ippubblikat: 06.09.2018

The train journey to Rijeka takes about 5 hours from Zagreb. By car/bus it takes significantly less time, but since I have an InterRail pass, I'm using it. Unfortunately, there was a track defect in the middle of the journey and we had to transfer to a bus. (I didn't want to take a bus anymore 😔)

Upon arriving in Rijeka, I went to the hostel and relaxed for a bit. The hostel was really small, I think it had room for 12 people, and it was centrally located. But it wasn't particularly good. The floor creaked like crazy when you moved and there were no curtains, so sleep wasn't very restful. But the staff was really nice!

After relaxing, I went to the beach, which was unfortunately a disappointment. It was a small stone beach with freezing cold and dirty water. So going to Rijeka to say goodbye to the beach was not the best choice.. However, it was a city beach. The beaches a little further away from Rijeka are supposed to be much nicer.

In the evening, I talked and played cards with people from the hostel. But it didn't last long because I was really tired.

So the next day I did some sightseeing since the beach was a disappointment. Rijeka is not a particularly big city, but it has its beautiful buildings and churches. But nothing really special...

So I didn't experience any highlights there.

The next day I wanted to go to Ljubljana. That's the capital of Slovenia. I wanted to take a day off there and then go to Vienna. I made this stopover so that the journey to Vienna wouldn't be so long.

But guess how I got to Ljubljana. That's right, by bus... the train route was also defective here.

I really liked Ljubljana. It's a beautiful little capital with great churches and various buildings, a beautiful castle, and more. I said goodbye to Yugoslavian food there and had Cevapcici one last time. I also had barley soup, which I hadn't had in a long time.

I went to a Museum of Illusion. That was really cool and confusing.

The hostel in Ljubljana was okay, but nothing special, and since I was only there for one night, it didn't matter.

What I also found pleasant was that it was cooler. Finally, no more sweating. 24 degrees Celsius can stay that way for the rest of my journey.

So finally, I went to Vienna, this time by train.
