Maokong - a place without cats?

Ippubblikat: 09.04.2023

Maokong is an area in Wenshan District of Taipei. It is home to tea plantations and connected hiking trails that were once used for transporting tea. It is a popular place to enjoy tea culture.

A funny story revolves around the name: it can be translated as 'cat empty', meaning no cats. In earlier times, there was a big mouse problem. To combat it, many cats were brought in. After the mouse problem was solved, people didn't want the cats anymore and took them all away. Today, you can find cat statues and cat pictures everywhere. Secret revealed: I also found a little rebel. 😅

You can hike up or conveniently take the Maokong Gondola, which covers a distance of about 4 km. The 'crystal cabin' is highly recommended, with its transparent floor, even if the waiting time here is a bit longer.

An interesting hike leads through a green landscape, up and down many stone and wooden steps, to a remote monastery and a waterfall.

Charming restaurants with wonderful views of the city invite you to eat and, of course, to drink tea. The selection of teas is overwhelming. The waiters are happy to provide detailed explanations on how to properly handle and enjoy the different teas.

I highly recommend a trip to Maokong. 😻
