“Perle der Lahn” invites you to a wine tasting

How can a day start better than with a serenade from the motorhome friends of Europe? A good question that Liane, celebrating her birthday, must have asked herself this morning when almost 40 voices sang the club anthem "Red Roses". And because it was so beautiful, a mother came with her little Lena and asked if we could sing for her daughter too, because it was her birthday today too. Our class choir didn't need to be asked twice and "Red Roses" rang out again - and as an encore "Long live her!" I'm sure the three-year-old will never forget this birthday for the rest of her life. She has something in common with Liane in that respect...

We were scheduled to leave for the train station in Nievern at 3:45 p.m. Today we were invited to a wine tasting in Obernhof – the “Pearl of the Lahn”. We had five hours to get there. Peter, the head of the cash register, couldn’t find any peace. As a former football referee, he not only has sharp eyes but also sharp ears. “Someone’s knocking?” he was heard murmuring as he wandered around the campsite. And indeed, there was something knocking. Finally, the culprit was caught red-handed: it was Gerd, the head chef, who was using a meat tenderizer to tenderize a whole mountain of schnitzel. On Saturday, Inge is celebrating her 80th birthday and has invited everyone to dinner. Gerd was happy to take on the task – as always, which cannot be praised highly enough.

In the afternoon we took the train four stops to Obernhof, where winemaker Norbert Massengeil and his neighbor and colleague Kristina Haxel welcomed us with a glass of white wine. The winemaker led us across the Lahn - there was another taste of the fine wines in the middle of the bridge - to the main building of the Massengeil-Beck Lahn winery. Over a rustic snack, the head of the house introduced his wines, talked about the hard work in his vineyards, the dependence on the weather and the often difficult decisions a winemaker has to make. And he shared dreams with his guests: "I would like the whole Lahn region to one day manage to present itself to the outside world as a closed unit."

We can't contribute much to that. But with our purchases we were able to show that we enjoyed the entertaining presentation of his winery - and that we enjoyed his wines.
