Dunedin and the Santa Parade

प्रकाशित: 09.12.2023

So today she was at the Santa Parade, it was supposed to start in the afternoon. In the morning the day started with rain again, a lot of rain, so I took it easy. And when the rain stopped around midday, I headed into town.

My first stop was the Otago Museum. There is an exhibition or collection of Moa skeletons there. The moa was once a large flightless bird, similar to the ostrich, but much larger. It could grow up to 3m tall. There were a few of them in the Otago Museum, including a very large one - very impressive.

We continued through the city center, looked into the shops a bit and bought something 😉. And then it was already 3 p.m. People were standing left and right on the long street waiting for the Santa parade. Children and adults were sometimes dressed in Christmas headdresses and clothing. The parade started with the group of bagpipe players in kilts - as it should be. After that, some institutions of the city came - a decorated ambulance, a kindergarten, etc. took part in the parade with colorful vehicles. You can probably compare the whole event with carnival in Cologne, Düsseldorf, etc. It was a colorful and very bizarre event. After an hour I left. My day in Dunedin was too much to just see this parade.

We continued to the next museum: the Otago Settler Museum - here the settlement from the beginning was shown. The great thing here is that in most museums (mostly the state ones) you don't pay an entrance fee. This makes it very complicated to go to museums. Because you can, for example, just look at one or a few things and then leave again without paying an expensive entrance fee...

Finally, there was the Dunedin train station, a really beautiful old building in which time somehow seems to have stood still. The trains probably still run on time 😉.

I have now visited several cities on my trip, and although I really like cities, especially their architecture, I notice that there doesn't seem to be anything new to see anymore. The cities don't really blow me away anymore. Nature here does that even more...
