Okavango Delta

Arriving in Maun, we were driven to our hotel. There, we had some afternoon rest by the pool and were then introduced by our tour guide. For the next 6 days, we traveled with a group and went on a truck through Botswana and Namibia to Zimbabwe. Afterwards, we had dinner with the group at the campsite. The next morning, we started early. After breakfast, we drove about 4 hours north to a meeting point where we were picked up in an old army vehicle. We were taken to a lodge on the edge of the Okavango Delta, where we spent the next 2 nights in tents. In the evening, we were chauffeured on a boat through the delta and got to see hippos, crocodiles, and a large number of exotic birds.

The next morning, we got back on the boat and sailed through the narrow channels surrounded by papyrus to an island in the middle of the delta. From there, we continued on 'Mokoros'. These are traditional boats used in the shallow waters of the delta. Two of us sat on the wooden canoe with a guide who led us through the fascinating water world. After about 1.5 hours of sailing, we stopped on another island. There, we continued on foot and our guide told us how the delta residents used to live. Until 1995, there were actually people living in the delta. He demonstrated how they braided their ropes, built their houses, what they ate, and which plants they used as mosquito repellent. After our walk, we returned to the Mokoros, where we had some food before making our way back to the lodge. After dinner, we went to bed early as we were leaving the delta the next morning for the next stage of the tour.
