An addendum to yesterday: the epicenter of the first earthquake the night before last was actually at the airport, not too far away. And the second one in the Amazon region, where so much was destroyed.

We used our day off today and took a taxi to the old center of Lima. We also saw a protest there, and we felt like we were back in Chile. And there was a parade at the presidential palace with all the fanfare. Unfortunately, some beautiful buildings are very rundown or almost crumbling. Otherwise, we just strolled through the city. The taxi ride takes about half an hour and always goes through heavy traffic, no matter what time of day. It's good that we have the peace and quiet here in our house and garden now, and don't live right by the Pan-American Highway anymore.

Last night, we took a walk along a street nearby to see the Christmas decorations in front of the houses. They're already going all out, and many houses already have the blinking Christmas tree. Some of it is hard to beat in terms of kitsch.
