I could pay right away if I wanted to... Wait a minute. I already paid for the trip in February when I booked. Apparently, that's not the case. But they will clarify it for me. Since I don't have a car yet, I decided to walk to Chania Town. According to the app, it's a 15-20 minute walk. The beach is only 6 minutes away from the hostel. There is a bus station in front of the house, but I think it's no longer in use. Later, I found a 'real' bus stop just around the bend. It even has a digital display showing when the next bus will arrive. Almost like in Switzerland...

It even has a digital display showing when the next bus will arrive. Almost like in Switzerland...
On the way to the beach, I went shopping for drinks. I wasn't hungry, but I was very thirsty. Finally, I reached the sea. It was big, blue-green, and a bit wavy. The wind felt pleasant on my skin and made the water sway with a few waves. There were only a few swimmers, probably because Crete has many beautiful beaches and the one in town is not one of them. I walked along the promenade, passing by tavernas where locals and tourists were enjoying themselves. Most of them spoke Greek, and it was rare to hear other languages. The blue sky, the harbor ambiance, the boats, and the seagulls... it all felt like vacation. Then I saw the lighthouse, the landmark of Chania, getting closer. I also discovered many stores and shopping opportunities along the way. There was everything a tourist could desire, but also some hidden gems. You just have to look closely and separate the wheat from the chaff. 😊 I bought a few small things and time flew by. There weren't many people in the alleys and restaurants, which made it pleasant. The Greeks told me there are several flights from Germany and Switzerland to Crete every day. This is probably why there are more tourists here now, as Spain and Portugal are not in high demand due to the coronavirus. I explained to them that Greece has become a popular destination for many people.

I discovered this goldsmith on Facebook around 2 years ago, and since then, her pieces have captivated me. She ships worldwide, but I wanted to see her jewelry in person and try them on. Finally, the day had come! I was so excited. Last week, I sent her a message to announce my visit, and it seemed to leave a lasting impression. She immediately recognized me and greeted me warmly.
I still wasn't hungry, but I drank a lot. Now, it was time to fulfill my main goal in Chania: visiting the jewelry store 'Alexia Jewels'. What followed is indescribable. It was a perfect example of Greek hospitality. After trying on a few pieces and deciding which ones to buy, the hospitality began. Alexia, her daughter Eveline, and her husband Manolis pampered me with cookies and perfectly made frappé. Suddenly, Manolis appeared with a huge bag of herbs for tea and seasoning, all collected and dried by themselves. We are now friends on Facebook, and I will visit them again tomorrow. They want to mark some sights on my map and invite me for coffee. They find my positive attitude charming and have offered to help me whenever I need something. Manolis even wanted to accompany me to the 3 monasteries, but he has to work. It was an unexpectedly warm and touching encounter. 😊

I tried to find a taxi, but they were all occupied. So, I had no choice but to walk back. It took me 30 minutes! When I finally found the taxi station, the driver explained that many flights had just landed, making it difficult to find a cab. I didn't mind as long as I didn't have to take another step with my purchases and the big bag of herbs! 😄

The night was pleasant. Actually very quiet. The air conditioner did its best and the temperature was very comfortable for sleeping in the windowless room with 4 sleeping pods and a private bathroom. The door to the hallway is just a sheet of paper, at least in terms of soundproofing. 😊
