In Morocco, but especially in Fes, many beautiful mosaics are displayed on buildings, columns, and fountains. During our city tour today, we not only saw many mosaics, but also visited a place where they are made. First, clay is shaped into tiles, which are glazed after the initial firing and then coated with enamel and fired for a third time. The fired tiles are then broken into the corresponding shapes with a hammer and packed into bags. The mosaic installer then lays the mosaic on the ground upside down (sometimes mistakes happen - see last picture), it is then poured with plaster and attached to the wall as a panel. Some of the mosaics in Fes are several hundred years old, while others are still made using traditional methods.
