We went back to the river nearby. But this time not just to look, but actually to swim. Afterwards, I walked along a long field path where the cave paintings are supposed to be. So I walked and walked for a long time until I actually came across them.
I saw a small creature, similar to a mini kangaroo. But it was (at least according to my research) an echidna. I climbed over all the rocks there and had a great view of everything. What a magical place! The walk back to the accommodation then took a whole 1.5 hours.
Since we were grilling on the weekend, I went shopping. The others transferred the money to me. It was in my account in ten minutes. Germany could learn a thing or two from this. But this joy didn't last long. In the evening, the whole island lost phone and internet connection. Some said that on other islands the repair took almost a month and they had to do without communication with the outside world for that long. Great. And the store was even quieter because card payments were not possible.
But the internet was back the next day. In the evening, a herd of children stormed the store. Two of us stood at the entrance door to make sure no one stole anything. It was really chaotic. Screams and they ran through the store. Pure chaos!
On the weekend, we went back to the pool in the town and went shopping again for the communal barbecue in the evening. But when we came back, I had a fit. Cockroaches in my room. Signs of cockroaches in the kitchen pantry. I packed everything in airtight containers, put them in the fridge, or froze them. I was overcome with disgust.
One day, a few children wanted to steal something again. My colleague was standing in front of the door smoking. There was only one girl at my register. And just then, he came in and she ran out with the cola in her hand. I jumped over the counter and chased after her. Of course, I was faster than her and she dropped the bottle. They thought it was funny that I chased after her.
I was furious and immediately told the bosses about it. The police can't do anything about it unfortunately, otherwise one would be racist towards the Aborigines again. Sounds a bit like the situation in Germany. In any case, it is sad not to be able to really do anything about it.
