From Menzies to Lake Ballard

From Kalgoorlie, we headed north into the Outback towards Lake Ballard, a journey of approximately 150 km. The roadbook is quite simple: 100 km straight ahead to Menzies, then turn right in the village and continue straight for another 50 km on a dirt track. The distances out here are staggering.

Menzies is a crossroads village with everything you need for supplies: a store, cafe, gas station, campground, and even a condom dispenser! It's amazing how the Australians provide infrastructure even in the most remote places.

Lake Ballard was absolutely fascinating from a landscape perspective. It has been dry for years, with just a bit of moisture resulting in some mud, and on top of that, a layer of salt crust glistening in the sunlight. The sight is incredible! There is a great view from a small hill in the middle of the "lake". Plus, there is art in the lake: an artist has created approximately 50 metal statues representing the residents of Menzies. The figures are scattered throughout and encourage you to hike from artwork to artwork. It was somehow fascinating and amusing.
