Møns Klint - "The Rock King's Realm" hike after the storm

We spent the night in the marina in Kalvehave Havn and in the morning we could see from our pitch over the bridge that would shortly take us to the island of Møn. The article we read about a hiking trail there was the reason for our vacation to the Danish islands in the south.

After the storms that had hit the east coast of the country just two days earlier, the weather was now nice and we were greeted by blue skies and sunshine again. So we set off and drove to the east of Møn, where our hike with the beautiful title “The Realm of the Rock King” was to start.

On the premium hiking trail you can discover everything that Møns Klint has to offer: chalk cliffs, beach, forest, pastures and hills.

So we set off on the 14.5 km long path. However, we didn't know whether we would actually see everything - after all, the storm had left its mark on the coast.

As we walked through the forest, there were a lot of leaves and some branches on the path. Occasionally we also had to avoid or climb over a fallen tree.

Nevertheless, the path was beautiful and varied and finally led us to Liselund Park.

Liselund Park

A Danish nobleman had a romantic landscape park created here with small buildings and a pleasure palace.

From the park we should have climbed down steps to the beach on the chalk coast. Here the storm was so raging that the steps were no longer accessible and we had to go back through the forest along the cliffs.

As it turned out later, all the stairs along the path were damaged, so we couldn't go to the beach at all.

At the second staircase we were smart enough not to go down first, but to wait for a group of hikers coming from below. For them the descent and ascent was in vain because the beach was not accessible and so we saved ourselves the many steps.

But there were also beautiful views of the chalk coast from above.

Due to the storm, the chalk had also found its way up and so the forest looked like it was covered in snow: everything was covered in a white layer of chalk.

The hike also took us past the GeoCenter Møns Klint, an exhibition on landscape and nature. Since the opening times were already shortened due to the end of the season, we only had about an hour for the exhibition (and the longed-for coffee break). Since the tickets are still valid the next day, we decided to extend our stay on Møn by another day to see the rest of the exhibition later.

Our path took us further along the coast, where we could clearly see how the washed-off chalk turned the sea water white.

Finally the path led us back inland and through the forest again before we arrived back at the hiking car park.
