Rest day in Pamplona, Day 23

Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Day 23
Today we had a well-deserved, but also much-needed rest day in Pamplona. A very beautiful old town where occasionally poor bulls are chased through the streets by crazy young men. Today it was quiet there.
That's why there is not much to report from today, and there are not many pictures (it was 38° and we didn't spend much time in the city), but there are still two topics we would like to share with you.
In France, we bravely struggled with French for almost three weeks, and although the French initially had difficulty with our language, it got better in the end. In southwestern France, we were almost afraid that we might have forgotten our Spanish vocabulary. However, this fear was taken away from us at the beginning of the Basque Country, because there people speak French, Basque, and Spanish. Multitalented ‼️ We have also learned some Basque words that are very useful in everyday life. Who wants to play a little quiz? Here it comes: what does "Komunak" mean? You can guess and write it in the chat, the solution will be revealed tomorrow. But our Spanish has also quickly recovered and we are back in the flow, much easier than our French (which wasn't so bad in the end), after all, today we easily found our way to a laundromat in Pamplona.
The other topic occupied us for half of the day, because soon, in 100 km, we will have La Rioja right in front of us (via Logroño to Soria). A very famous wine region, a beautiful mountain range, a real challenge for cyclists because of the high altitude and sometimes very steep slopes (over 20% incline). Compared to that, the Pyrenees were more of a training area for us. It is a big challenge for us that we would like to ride, especially since we now feel confident in uphill climbs, steep routes, and even continuously uphill for 30 km. Our main problem is that there are no suitable accommodations for us in the area, at least not within distances that are suitable for us as day stages. We are still researching and will keep you updated on whether we can even cross La Rioja. No accommodation so far!! Tomorrow we will definitely continue heading south until we reach Estella.
