Salamanca

We had a somewhat restless night! Due to the Villamayor “Virgen de los remedios” fiesta, there was a huge party with a disco and laser show not far from us. It started at 11:30 p.m. and ended sometime early in the morning.

Since we want to see Salamanca in the evening, we take it easy and drive into the city in the afternoon. Contrary to what we expected on Saturday, almost all the shops are already closed and the streets are almost empty. To make matters worse, we are hit by a thunderstorm. We take shelter first and then bravely carry on walking. By chance, we end up in the baroque church of La Vera Cruz, which dates back to the 16th century. It is of particular importance during Holy Week. We are overwhelmed!

We continue to the new and old cathedral. Equipped with an audio guide, we explore the impressive churches, and we particularly like the old cathedral. A small choir is practicing for tomorrow's festival - given the excellent acoustics, it sounds like a much larger number of singers.

Meanwhile, the streets are full of people again. After an aperitif in front of the cathedral, we find a small restaurant and can eat a delicious meal outside.

It is slowly getting dark and we walk to the Placa Major. We have another beer and then finally the square is lit up and a murmur goes through the square. The wait was worth it!

At the bus stop we are surprised by the number of young people waiting. The driver of the first bus makes it clear to us that it is only stopping at a bus stop and is not taking us to the campsite. But the next bus is also for us and we learn from a young woman that they are all going to the party in Villamayor. So we prepare ourselves for another night of music, which starts promptly at 11:30 p.m.!
