The ancient bay of Butrint

प्रकाशित: 23.04.2022

The ancient Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located between Lake Butrint and the Vivar Channel. The sights from approximately 2500 years ago show buildings from Greek antiquity to Ali Pasha.

We visited this gem today. Beautifully located and lovingly maintained, it attracts most tourists in Albania. We were lucky today because it's still relatively calm in the preseason. However, there was a little bitter pill at the entrance. People with disabilities only pay half. However, only if they are Albanians. So I had to pay the full entrance fee, which I found very unfortunate. So it's not just in Germany that a glaring difference is made.

So we set off and calmly explored the ruins in Butrint. The small peninsula and the excavation sites can be thoroughly explored in 2 hours. However, good footwear is important. Because the paths are often rocky and sometimes difficult to recognize. In addition, there are steep uphill and downhill sections.

The historical sites are well explained in English and you can also take an individual guided tour or a group tour.

Halfway there, we met a couple from Husum. Both were so enthusiastic that they looked at everything there for the second day in a row. After a long chat and mutual photography, we continued hiking. You could linger, picnic, or simply enjoy nature in many places.

Afterwards, we headed towards Greece. The border is not far from Butrint. On the way there, we had to take a rather daring ferry. A few pontoons, screwed-on planks, and the ferry is ready. We stood in front of it for a while and wondered if we should take the risk with our camper. But then we gathered courage and off we went. The thing was surprisingly more stable than we thought and we crossed safely. Okay, a few drops of sweat did flow 😉
