#78 Small Town with Special Flair

February 21-22, 2022: Lagos, Burgau

J. Lagos is a lovely small town with many small shops and cafes that invite you to stroll and linger in the sun. We saw many people sitting in larger groups outside restaurants or with laptops in trendy cafes. In addition to souvenir shops, we also found some ceramic shops and a store that only sells things made of cork. The reason why there is so much going on here despite the off-season is probably due to the many expats who live in the area. (Expat = someone who works abroad for a longer period of time) We even found a "Classic, English Bookshop" where only English-language second-hand books were offered and where an old woman with the purest British accent told us which shelves we could find books on which topics.

In addition to the town, Lagos is known for its rocky coastline with numerous beaches. Near Lagos, there is a cape on a rugged cliff coast called Ponta da Piedade. The barren rocks reminded us of the cliff coast where we went hiking yesterday, but they were even more rugged and had already collapsed in many places. Almost at the top, a long staircase carved into the rocks led down to the water. From there, you could watch the roaring sea crash wave after wave through the rock arches and into the caves at eye level, and you had to be careful not to get wet from the splashing spray of a slightly more powerful wave. I am always impressed by the power of the sea. But there were also beautiful views of the surrounding coast and the rugged cliffs from above.

We used one of the many beaches the next day when we went to Burgau. We lay on the beach, sunbathed, read books, observed the surfers, and even went into the cold Atlantic Ocean twice ourselves. The waves here are really high and have a strong undertow, so if you are not knee-deep in the water, you sometimes have to be careful not to be swept away by the undertow. Furthermore, you should also go into the water with only your swimwear on, as a high wave can quickly splash up to your chest. That's why we could observe some beach walkers who got very wet pants.

By the way, Lagos is pronounced Lagusch and should not be confused with Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria.
