3. Post - The Market

प्रकाशित: 20.08.2023

In Saint-Denis, the largest market on the island takes place every Sunday and Wednesday. Since the food prices in supermarkets are really exorbitantly high (e.g. a jar of peanut butter for €7), I really wanted to go there.

So Yasmine and I took the bus towards Saint-Dennis l'hôtel de ville around 09:30 and within 10 minutes we were in the hustle and bustle of the 'Chaudron' market.

At this market with over 400 stalls, you can find everything imaginable in terms of fruit and vegetables. There is also freshly squeezed juice, fish, meat, traditional clothing, jewelry, souvenirs, spices, medicinal herbs, and even live ducks and chickens.

It was very crowded and there were a lot of people, but the atmosphere was simply fantastic. The vendors loudly advertised their goods and were all very friendly. Although they made fun of our overly polite and somewhat rusty French, in the end they gave us an extra apple or samoussa (an Asian/Arab specialty) without charge.

When we arrived home completely exhausted, I spent the rest of the day first by the pool and then in bed with a slight sunstroke - this island is wearing me out. But in a good way!
