Packing List and Trial Packing

Publicēts: 20.07.2019

I'm packing my suitcase and taking with me....

Probably everyone knows that. But only when you have to think about what to pack when the journey is going around the world, various temperatures await you, the backpack should remain portable and has limited volume, you realize it during the planning process. With these requirements in mind, we then looked at the equipment we had with us in Patagonia and exchanged, adjusted, recognized as unnecessary, and discussed some things. Sometimes even the scale decided whether the pants or the other one should come along...

Our honeymoon in Patagonia was a great help in creating our packing list. The experience we gained in the four weeks there also saved us a few grams in our backpacks.

So, what are we taking with us?

Marius has in his 75l backpack: tunnel tent, down sleeping bag, sleeping mat, one pair of shoes, clothing in waterproof stuff sacks (1 sweater, 1 zip-off pants, 1 pair of shorts, 1 bathing suit, 3 merino t-shirts, 1 merino long-sleeve shirt, 2 shirts, 6 pairs of underwear, down vest), gas stove, notebook with charger, GoPro with charger, diary, e-reader, pillowcase, travel blanket, memory cards, knife, multitool, toiletry bag, repair kit for sleeping mats, hammock, cutlery, mosquito net, towel, document bag, water bladder, water filter, solar shower, packable daypack.

Additionally, he has a set of clothes to wear on the body.

Cerina has in her 65l backpack: down sleeping bag, sleeping mat, one pair of shoes, clothing, cooking pot, plate, hammock, first aid kit, medication, travel blanket, camera, e-reader, toiletry bag, packable daypack, headlamp, water bladder, waist bag, travel adapter, power bank, mini clothesline.

I believe that was it. This is what it looks like spread out:

Then the first step: clothes in the stuff sacks, one set on the body. It looks like this:

Then put everything in the backpack and voila, world trip:

Marius' backpack weighs 16.6 kg, and Cerina's weighs 13.2 kg.

Initially, that seemed a bit too much for us, 1 kg less each would be good. However, we didn't really know where we could cut down. Leave out the hammocks? They are not heavyweights with about 300 g each, and we would regret it if we needed them and didn't have them. The mosquito net? You probably can't sleep peacefully in Southeast Asia without it, bad idea. Less clothing? Even less? :D We thought about every single item and will start with it for now. Practice will show.

PS: Only one more week of work left!
