This morning we drove past Munkholmen into Trondheim. Munkholmen is a small island in the Trondheimsfjord about two kilometers outside the city of Trondheim. There used to be a monastery there, then a prison, today it is a popular tourist destination, with regular boat connections from Trondheim. We used our stay to visit Nidaros Cathedral, the old city bridge and the old town with its many old wooden houses. Nidaros Cathedral is the northernmost Gothic cathedral in the world. It is also a place of pilgrimage and a coronation and blessing church for Norwegian kings. In the afternoon we drive past the Kjeungskjaer lighthouse as we leave the Tronheimfjord. It was built in 1880 on a small skerry off Ørland, a deep red, octagonal, 20-meter-high lighthouse, incidentally the only octagonal one in Norway. The last permanent lighthouse keeper left Kjeungskjaer in 1987 when the operation was automated. We continue to Rørvik, Brønnøsund, Sandnessjøen, where we arrive in Nesna tomorrow morning.
