Before starting our main activity, namely cycling the 'Drauradweg' from Toblach (Italy) to Lavamünd (on the Slovenian border), we had planned a 'free' day in Toblach. We wanted to use this day to visit the world-famous 'Tre Cime' which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The national park is apparently so popular that there are even shuttle buses to a nearby hut. However, we found out that you have to book the ride by 12:00 noon the day before. Well, such conditions usually don't promise much good, but rather lots of people. So we decided to find out how else we can get to the area. The answer was simple: of course by bike. Since we had already rented them from that day, it was obvious. The park is located almost halfway between Toblach and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Italian luxury resort in the Dolomites and... James Bond filming location in 1980 :-). The cycle path follows the track of a former railway line, which means that the ascent is very moderate. Passing the picturesque Toblach Lake, the route leads through spruce and pine forests, along the riverbed, through the most wonderful mountain landscape.
The 'Tre Cime View' compensates for the ascent. From here, you could hike up to the Tre Cime Hut, but with a round trip of 3.5 hours, it would have been too much for us, especially since we wanted to relax a bit as well. We did that after descending from Lake Landro, on the shady shore of Toblach Lake. And just like the ascent, the descent is also very pleasant because the gentle slope prevents you from constantly having to brake. By the way, the tour could be extended to Cortina. There are public buses with bicycle trailers that will comfortably take you back to Dobbiaco.
During the excellent dinner, we also noticed that double-headed eagles are not only found in football stadiums.
Tomorrow we will start our cycling tour on the Drauradweg and the weather forecast is still good for Friday at least...
