192.-195. Day 26.03 - 29.03 Kangaroo Island

Publicēts: 17.06.2019

Tuesday 26.03.

Let's go on the ferry. The first time for Babse to ride on a car ferry. After a leisurely breakfast, we took the 45 minute journey to Kangaroo Island. I had to reverse onto the ferry while loading. Once we arrived, we bought a bottle of beer and a Little Fat Lamb (alcoholic drink).

Right after our arrival, we saw dolphins peacefully swimming along the beach. We continued on a shortcut to the American River Campground. We had a nice afternoon there, finished both bottles and had a lot of fun. Many pelicans were flying around, which is why the bay is called Pelican Bay.

Wednesday 27.03.

We woke up early in the morning and observed many birds and pelicans in the calm bay. After breakfast, we continued our way to Emu Bay where it is allowed to drive on the white sandy beach. Despite the bad weather and drizzle, we saw some dolphins peacefully swimming along the beach. On the way, things got interesting. In the middle of nowhere, a dreamlike castle was built by a private person with attention to detail and many extras. Someone has realized their dream as a hobbyist.

At noon, we were at a beach and made fried potatoes. Among other things, we went swimming and I surfed on some waves with the surfboard. Sunbathing streak-free was not a problem at this beach.

As we continued driving, I saw a small off-road road and instinctively turned around.

I wanted to see where this road leads: and we were not disappointed, on the contrary! This was the most beautiful place on the whole Kangaroo Island.

Many wild and big kangaroos, vast plains, a country road leading to an old dilapidated and burned down hut, and a view of the sea and the surrounding nature. It was simply beautiful.

We both woke up to a wonderful sunrise over the sea and had a breathtaking view from the tent. This is how I imagine pure nature. After breakfast, we headed to the Waterfall Creek Walk (5km), a smaller hiking trail to a more beautiful waterfall. When we arrived there, the creek was not flowing. So we continued to the Flinders Chase National Park. There we hiked the Black Swamp Hike with 9km and in the evening walked to Snake Lagoon and the sea with a really beautiful landscape (5km).

Upon arrival at the campsite, there was a culinary highlight: since we still had leftover rolls, we made bread dumplings with creamy mushroom sauce. What a delicious dinner.

Friday 29.03.

Waking up in the tent, we saw many wallabies on a meadow and then started our journey back. We drove back on the very bumpy, let's call it a "road", to the Admiral Arch Walk, a viewpoint where New Zealand fur seals frolic on the rocks.

It was nice to see, but we were both very grateful for our sunglasses, sturdy shoes, and rain jackets. I hadn't experienced such strong headwind in a long time, but we both had a lot of fun.

We then drove the 150km long island back to the ferry. When we crossed with the ferry, we drove to Rapid Bay in the dark without functioning turn signals, the campground where we had already been before.
