The Sea Cloud Spirit in Hamburg
June 14, 2022
On Thursday, June 16, 2022, the Sea Cloud Spirit will enter the Port of Hamburg for the first time. In keeping with the long-standing friendship between the Hamburg shipping company Sea Cloud Cruises and the International Maritime Museum Hamburg, we have been invited to the front row of this celebration. We would like to share this special event with all of you online. If you cannot be there in person at the Port of Hamburg, you can watch the event live on the museum's Facebook page.
The Sea Cloud Spirit is a breathtaking three-masted tall ship. It was commissioned three-quarters of a year ago, bringing a happy ending to a construction process that was plagued by several crises. It is the youngest of the three sailing ships owned by its shipping company and the largest traditionally hand-sailed cruise ship in the world. This windjammer is in the tradition of the original Sea Cloud, a spectacular sailing yacht built in 1931 at the Germania Werft in Kiel. It was originally built as the largest private yacht in history and had a highly eventful career, which is vividly depicted in our exhibition on Deck 6. The original Sea Cloud was the origin of Sea Cloud Cruises in 1994. The company still operates it, as well as the Sea Cloud II since 2001. The Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest member of the fleet, preserving the spirit of the original.
After following the complicated history of its construction, we are overjoyed that it will finally arrive in our port.
After sailing from London through the North Sea, the Sea Cloud Spirit will arrive at the mouth of the Elbe River on Thursday, June 16th, around 11 am and pass Cuxhaven. We expect this magnificent windjammer on the Elbe around 4:15 pm as it enters the Hamburg area. From there, we will accompany her on her slow journey to her berth at the Überseebrücke in downtown Hamburg. Her arrival there is planned for around 5:30 pm. Anyone who has sailed in the Port of Hamburg knows that this short trip will be spectacular, especially when a ship like the Sea Cloud Spirit leads the way.
You can accompany us online as we enter the Port of Hamburg through our live streaming on Facebook - which we will also upload to our other social media channels later.
