If you're ever in Perth, Rottnest Island should be at the top of your list of things to see. The island is located about 20 km off the coast of Perth and can be reached by ferry in 40 minutes. Cars are not allowed on the island, but it can be easily explored by bike. Kathi, a German girl from the hostel, accompanied me and we explored the island together. Magnificent coastal formations, high dunes, and crystal-clear water - perfect for snorkeling - are not all that the island has to offer. It is one of the few places in Australia where quokkas, small rat-like marsupials, live. And only here can you observe them during the day.

Although the island is overall very flat and not very large, there are constant ups and downs. Due to the strong wind on this day and the constant sun exposure, we arrived at the ferry completely exhausted and sunburnt just in time. After the hardships of the day, we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset at the harbor of Freemantle in the evening.
