Today we drive past Nelson, leave Nelson-Marlborough Land and drive again on a wild road with many curves over hills and valleys. The trucks drive almost as fast as we do on the narrower roads, some even want to overtake. Do you know the 1971 film 'Duel' by Steven Spielberg? The villains (mentioned above) play the lead role! Here they drive like the devil...
And then a first glimpse of the Queen Charlotte Sound, on which the ferry sails towards Wellington. On the map you can see how the ferry has to make curves to get through the fjord. And there is our large ferry from Interislander named Kaitaki, which shuttles between Picton on the South Island and Wellington on the North Island. The crossing is 92 kilometers long and takes about 3 hours. The luggage is checked in like at the airport and then we're off. Along the way, we enjoy the picturesque landscapes of the Marlborough Sounds and the strong waves in the Cook Strait. And even this large ferry rocks quite a bit in the big waves. We have video proof!!! But with Vomex in our luggage, no problem! With a huge curve, the ferry finally steers into the port of Wellington after 3 hours. There is even a cruise ship - we wouldn't want to swap. Quickly pack our things, pick up the luggage, and then take a taxi to the hotel. We get a 5-room house with 3 bathrooms, a kitchenette, and a living room in the adjoining apartment row houses. Washing machine and dryer (Reinhard starts them right away) included. Then we take a first walk around the corner and check out the famous Cuba Street, which becomes a party mile at this time of day. Dinner at the Chinese restaurant with seafood noodle soup, lemon chicken, and a ginger beer. And to end the day, a beer at the Town House 13.
A great day with many great impressions from the water!
