Turtley awesome day!

ຈັດພີມມາ: 13.10.2019

3 days of rain finally over! Off to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling! As some may still remember, our last snorkeling trip was more of a day at the beach. And after the horrible weather of the last few days, we were really looking forward to this, hopefully wonderful day!

Our boat docked near Lady Musgrave Island. The tour we booked for today included a glass-bottom boat, a hike on the island, and snorkeling afterwards. So we took the glass-bottom boat to the island. There were many small, colorful fish to see. And also a cleaning station for the turtles! This is where the turtles lie down and let the little fish eat the algae off their bodies. A real win-win situation. The fish are full and the turtles are clean!

When we arrived on the island, our 'Master Reef Guide' was already waiting for us. The young marine biologist enthusiastically guided us around the island. The Great Barrier Reef is divided into 7 zones, which determine what activities are allowed on each island. 'Our' island is in the 'Green Zone', the second to last zone. This means that activities like collecting and fishing are prohibited here. But everyone is allowed to enter the island. The next zone is the 'Pink Zone', a restricted area. This protection zone can only be entered with written permission. Written permits are also required for research. But on the island, there was really nothing but nature! 'Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints!' Our guide could have raved about this island for hours but eventually, it had to come to an end :)
After a small lunch, it was finally time for snorkeling!! And what can I say. Our expectations were met! The turquoise water and the glass-bottom boat already gave us a glimpse of how beautiful it would be. But snorkeling with countless colorful fish, beautiful coral formations, and giant turtles is an experience you simply have to have!
Eventually, it was time to go back. On the 2-hour journey back, we met a couple from Lenggries. They gave us some tips for our planned trip to Fraser Island.
