Marienberg Benedictine Abbey

The rain and the low-lying clouds have cleared and we just returned from our first small hike to Marienberg Benedictine Abbey. Sort of as a warm up...

We became curious because we could see the monastery from the breakfast area window.

The abbey is located at an altitude of 1336 meters and is the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe. The description promises us a 'slightly uphill' path - those who know South Tyrol know what that means :-) According to the description, one should reach the monastery in 15 minutes...maybe if you're a well-trained decathlete...

So we always took a little break with a wonderful view :-)

The monastery got closer, it was quite uphill...

In collaboration with an architect, a guesthouse, library, and museum have been built at the monastery since the turn of the millennium.

Today, 9 priests and 2 brothers live in the monastery, and they are looking for new recruits. If you would like to get to know monastic life, there is the offer of 'Monastery for a time'.

The monastery church is also very friendly and bright.

Although the high altitude only allows limited gardening activities, there are terraced gardens.

The view of Burgeis on the way back to the holiday apartment was wonderful.

Arriving in Burgeis, we had a little coffee break at Ansitz zum Löwen with a delicious Linzer Schnitte.

On the way back to the holiday apartment, we crossed the still narrow but lively Etsch, which originates slightly above Burgeis at Lake Reschen.

Once we arrived there, we naturally tried out the cozy bench in front of the entrance.
