Another night on a Walmart well survived. You won't believe it, but I know a police officer here in Zebulon and he promised us personal police protection. Well, playing computer games can be quite cross-cultural. Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet Jamie anymore because, as usual, we set off early to explore the world. He recommended that we visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, but unfortunately Charlotte is already behind us and not on the way.
And today we set off for Chesapeake Bay. The Atlantic Ocean flows deep into the land there, cutting off a portion of Virginia on a peninsula from the mainland. A kind of delta forms there and the area is called the East Virginia Shore on the Delmarva Peninsula. Virginia's coast on the Atlantic. America was discovered from this direction. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel crosses the bay (about 37 km wide). Yes, that's right, it's a bridge that turns into a tunnel at two points to make way for the ocean giants. Impressive and awe-inspiring. It was definitely worth the $19 bridge toll. Before we got on the bridge, we made a stop in Virginia Beach. First, to catch a glimpse of the bridge from the land, which only worked to some extent because everything is built up. And then to have lunch. We headed to a Wafflehouse USA. There, all six of us had a very delicious and plentiful lunch for less than $50. It was even voted the best restaurant in Virginia Beach in 2013. The staff was extremely friendly and presumably had been there since the company was founded. :-) Waffles, omelettes with toast, and so on. Plus free water, as is generally customary... Simply wonderful. We were invited to come back next year. We'll see....
Then over the tunnels/bridge and now we're at the Cherrystone campground in Cape Charles. A huge campsite with everything you could wish for, the Bay's sea right in front of us. We secured the site (pitch) right in the front row by the water for $5. If you can, why not... :-) We've driven about 230 miles today, so we definitely deserve a nice view.
Tomorrow we're going to Washington D.C., which has been recommended to us from all sides as an absolutely worth seeing city. We're very excited... Good night from Virginia. Yours, Daniel
