Great Sand Dunes NP in Alamosa /Colorado - To see, or not to see?!

ຈັດພີມມາ: 26.05.2023

The day was actually dedicated to the Great Sand Dunes in Alamosa/Colorado. Normally, it takes about three hours by car from Santa Fe. However, if you combine the travel day with the start of Memorial Days, it can easily add up to a fourth hour.

Everything, and I mean everything that has some kind of rolling holiday home, is on the road on this day. It seems like little motorhomes and huge vehicles come out of every hole, with the latter towing a sand buggy, two or three motorcycles, or even their own car along with the actual 'living room wagon.' This makes overtaking on the single-lane country road, which was our route for 170 miles, almost impossible, as there were long stretches with dips that we couldn't see.

But eventually, we reached Antonio (before Alamosa), and then the fun and excitement about the sand dunes were gone. Dark clouds of threatening size with strong winds and rain loomed over us and in front of us. We knew that today wouldn't be the day for the dunes.

However, the view, if possible, of the snow-covered mountains, the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, was breathtaking.

Following Heinz Erhardt, we hereby report on the sand dunes for today: As you can see, you see nothing.

We plan to repeat the ascent of the dunes tomorrow morning, as the weather is expected to be much better. 'In God we trust!' 😊 ... and we postpone it to tomorrow.
