Since our return flight to Germany was quite late, we decided to take a trip to Funchal after a leisurely breakfast (finally on the hotel terrace overlooking the sea).
First, we took a walk along the promenade towards the east to Fortaleza de Sao Tiago.
Previously, Funchal's city wall, which was supposed to protect the town from pirate attacks, used to reach up to here.
Currently, there was no exhibition in the fort. However, it was freely accessible.
Then we strolled back along the promenade in the other direction until we reached the CR7 Museum.
Already in front of the entrance, you can see who this is about: There is a life-sized statue of Cristiano Ronaldo, which he had made himself in 2014.
In the museum, you can admire over 100 trophies of the football star.
There are also photos, fan mail, and life-size representations of the athlete:
A Madame Tussauds-style wax figure and also a chocolate replica.
Next, we wanted to go to Santa Catarina Park, but we only looked at the map. When it came to actually implementing the plan, we realized that it was unfortunately at a different level than we were. Even in Funchal, the mountains are already in the way...
Eventually, we found a staircase and walked through the park, where many locals were enjoying the beautiful weather and Easter holidays.
From there, we continued towards the cathedral, which we had already visited on the first day, and through the narrow streets of the old town.
We strolled until we reached the town hall and then walked back towards the promenade.
There, to match the sunny weather, we had a large ice cream sundae before taking the bus back to the hotel.
We still had some time to lie on the sun terrace by the sea and observe the many lizards in the wall next to us before our transfer to the airport departed.
We flew back to Germany with a slight delay.
