We have big plans for the first day in the Keys because we will be going all the way down and not up. Driving south to the southernmost point of North America (only 90 miles to Cuba), we make a quick stop in Marathon, where there is a turtle hospital. There, injured or sick turtles are operated on, nursed back to health or kept in care because they can no longer return to the wild. First some info, there are actually turtles that can live 100 years and they can weigh around 300kg.
In different turtles you can see very different turtles and some of them even have weights on their shells, these weights are used to enable them to dive. Because of various accidents, air gets under the shell and can no longer get out so that the turtles can dive again. Very clever, unfortunately these weights are thrown off again when the shell is replaced and therefore these trolls can no longer be released, because if they only swim on the surface they would starve or be eaten.
Afterwards we drive to Key West, everything there is very Cuban. Great music, lots of colorful and lovingly designed and painted houses and lots of chickens running around freely. We enjoy the view, have a delicious meal and then actually get ready for a sunset trip on a catamaran. Unfortunately, this one is also canceled because the weather is getting bad... bad luck.
We make the best of it and escape the weather and go 30 miles north to a beautiful beach, drink a beer and enjoy the sunset.
The next morning we check out again and are on the way to Miami, but on the way there is an absolute highlight for us "Theater of the Seat", where animals that can no longer be trained are kept and shows are put on and they are really spectacular. The pictures cannot express our enthusiasm because it was beautiful and a great idea to give the animals a good time and not keep them in small cages or aquariums. The highlight is a small lagoon where you can swim, there are rainbow fish that you can feed and pet because they are used to it. Mega!! Lukas and Mia don't want to get out of the water anymore and can only be lured with ice. But unfortunately we still have to drive to Miami and unfortunately also have to hand in our car. Good bye Chrysler, a great car. We loved you very much!
