On Sunday (13.08.2023) we arrived in Trincomalee after a three-hour bus ride. Here we were greeted at the bus station by deer and deer. They run freely on the streets, just like cows. Trincomalee is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where the sea is calm. It is a bit more touristy here, but not overcrowded.
We have a beautiful hotel. The complex resembles a jungle. Our room is small, but it has everything you need and the beach is only 300 meters away. It is a small oasis of peace and relaxation. Restaurants and markets are within walking distance.
Here we let ourselves drift. We sleep in in the morning, have breakfast, and spend the morning and afternoon mostly planning our trip. We spend the afternoon at the beach. There is a cool beach bar with free sun loungers and even shade.
We will be in Sri Lanka until 04.09.2023 and then fly to the Maldives. We booked the flights to the Maldives spontaneously - they were cheap and we couldn't resist 🤩. However, we didn't realize that it isn't so easy to get away from there, or to find a flight that makes sense for us and doesn't cost a fortune 🙈. Today we applied for a house sit in Sri Lanka. A house sit is a private house or apartment whose owners have pets and travel for a certain period of time. During this time, you live in their home for free and take care of it and the animals. Regardless of whether our application convinces or not, we will return to Sri Lanka for three weeks after the Maldives. We really like the country!
It is already certain that we will travel to Africa after that. Here we will meet friends and family and go on a safari, among other things.
Back to Trincomalee...
... the day before yesterday we got up at 5:00 am because we had booked a whale and dolphin watching tour. In advance, the organizer told us that the dolphins are sighted every day, but you need luck for the whales. We were lucky 😁. After already seeing several schools of dolphins, we also discovered a family of whales. This experience was indescribable! Since we observed the animals in the wild, it was difficult to take photos. Some memories simply have to be carried in your heart 😊. We were also able to see a beautiful sunrise.
Besides the beach, there isn't much to see here. But that doesn't bother us at all because we can let ourselves drift and live into the day.
Tomorrow we will continue by bus to Sigiriya in the interior of the country.
