In early September, the youth group of my village set off to Austria.
Our program consisted of a traditional Bavarian sausage breakfast at a friend's place, two small hikes, cooking together, and game nights.
We rented a self-catering house in Steinberg am Rofan. Right after our arrival there, we went on a small hike, just walking without a specific route. The path wasn't steep, it alternated between small trails and forest roads. At one point, we crossed a small stream that shimmered golden. We took a break at an alpine pasture. Luckily, the next day was the day of the cattle drive, and the pasture would be closed. On our way back, we crossed a cow meadow. It started to drizzle, but once again we were lucky: we made it back to our accommodation just before the heavy rain started.
The next day, we were slightly hungover and started our small hike at Lake Achensee. Unfortunately, the weather was changeable and very cloudy.
We hiked along a forest road with great views of the lake and a waterfall to a hut that was signposted. Upon arrival, we found out that it was someone's private residence. No problem, we continued on footpaths and climbed a little further uphill. On the final stretch to our new destination (another hut), the path was hardly recognizable. Up there, we enjoyed delicious Bavarian snacks and soup. After a very fun break, we went downhill again, where we cooled our feet in Lake Achensee. It was too cold for swimming.
