We had the hotel near Hamburg Altona train station. Since the weather was so beautiful, we walked along the Elbe River to Hamburg. After all, we will be sitting in a train for a long time during our trip around the world....
On the way, we passed the Old Elbe Tunnel, which was completed in 1911. The two tunnel tubes pass under the North Elbe River at a depth of almost 24 meters and connect the northern harbor edge with the Elbe island Steinwerder. It was considered a technical sensation when it was opened. No ramps were built for access, instead vehicles and passengers are transported by elevators.
When we crossed the tunnel towards Steinwerder Island, only one tunnel tube was open. As soon as we arrived at the other end, the second tunnel tube was reopened after 8 years of renovation by the Mayor of Hamburg.
Also on the way to Hamburg was the former Russian submarine that was in service during the Cold War off the coast of America and has now been converted into a museum.
From 1874 to 1877, the tower was the tallest building in the world and is still the 5th tallest church tower in the world today. In 1943, the church was heavily damaged during the bombing war, so that only the tower remains today. It is now a central memorial site for the victims of war and dictatorship from 1933 to 1945.
