Island of Penguins? I want to go there! The small island of Isla Magdalena, not far from Punta Arenas, is known for its penguin colonies, where you can find up to 60,000 breeding pairs of Magellanic penguins. You can reach the island through a day trip from Punta Arenas, and I was really excited that my host father, Hermán, managed to secure a spot for me. First, we took a bus outside the city to board a boat that took us to the island. Once there, you have an hour to take a small (fenced to minimize disturbance to the birds) stroll to observe penguins, seagulls, and maybe even cormorants. And they are truly fascinating ☺ Worthwhile!
