The Torre de Belém ("Tower of Belém") is a well-known landmark in Lisbon. It was built as one of two watchtowers in the Rio Tejo from 1515 and, unlike its twin tower on the other side of the river, survived the great earthquake of 1755, which almost completely devastated Lisbon.
Since we were among the last visitors of the day, we were able to admire the tower in peace and quiet in the evening light yesterday.
